On July 22, the Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS) Industry Team published the 2024 PSMS Annual Report, detailing progress in implementation maturity, assessment programs, stakeholder engagement and recommended practice (RP) updates.
After the 2015 publication of RP 1173, Pipeline Safety Management Systems, the pipeline industry began efforts to promote the commitment to and implementation of RP 1173. This year’s report highlights 2024 key activities, leadership correspondence, API and AGA program updates, regional association input, and more. It details the ongoing efforts to update the 1st edition of RP 1173 and recent initiatives from PHMSA and NTSB regarding PSMS. The report also reviews 2024 annual survey results from a quantitative and qualitative perspective, touching on the impacts of PSMS on safety performance while highlighting operator practices around leadership commitment and maturity evaluation. It also outlines 2025 planned activities while encouraging all pipeline operators to start their implementation journeys with small yet meaningful steps. The report helps demonstrate industry’s voluntary and proactive progress implementing PSMS to improve safety performance and reduce incidents.
